I’m writing this article for designers who wish to upgrade their careers in the field of design. Generally, designers begin their careers at the most basic level, such as graphic design. After gaining experience, they could eventually become UI and UX designers. Right now, every designer needs to be knowledgeable about a few key design-related abilities. Otherwise, they will not be able to run on the track.
Here, I’ll go through those crucial abilities. Let’s begin.
In terms of the design skills, I’ve separated them into two categories.
I.e., technical and soft skills
Technical skills are specific to the work that the designer performs, but soft skills are the abilities and personality characteristics that allow you to succeed in this field.
Technical Skills
Visual Design
Design Principles
UX Principles
Brand Guidelines
Device Platforms
Tools and Software
Visual Design: A designer must be able to arrange words and characters in an appealing manner. The designer must be able to select the right font for each project because font style, size, and weight all have an impact on how designs appear and may change how readers interpret your content.
Design Principles: A successful user interface is designed with a strong visual hierarchy as a guiding design principle. It entails arranging visual elements in such a way that the level of importance of each aspect is explained and users are guided to take specific actions. Color, scale, contrast, and balancing are the next most important aspects of establishing a design principle.
UX Principles: The UX principles should be followed by the designer while creating a product. These include research, information architecture, user personas, wireframing, user flows, mockups, prototyping, and testing. A product will become even better if proper user research and testing are conducted. To ensure the success of the product, every designer should follow these principles.
Brand Guidelines: The purpose of branding guidelines is to maintain the consistency of the whole product. Therefore, while creating the applications, the designer should follow the guidelines. A unified design system is being created for all designers in order to follow the guidelines. It is a common structure that all other designers can use to keep the product consistent.
Device Platforms: The designer must create a stunning design and an unobtrusive app while ensuring cross-platform cohesiveness between each specific application across different devices and platforms, such as mobile, TV, smart watches, Android, and iOS devices.
Tools and Software: A designer should be familiar with both necessary and desirable tools. The three primary UI/UX design tools are currently used by the vast majority of designers. All three are fairly similar, just with slight differences.
Necessary: Adobe XD, Sketch, and Figma
Desirable: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InVision Studio, Proto.io, Marvel, Balsamiq, Flowmap, UXpin, Axure RP, etc.
These are the essential things required for technical skills.
Soft Skills
Communication
Collaboration
Psychological intelligence
Management of time
Divergent thinking
Storytelling
Prioritization
Communication: The ability to communicate clearly with teammates, clients, business analysts, product managers, developers, testers, and other stakeholders is a requirement for designers. Designers with good communication skills who can explain their ideas clearly and consistently are always in demand in the industry.
Collaboration: Collaboration with others is an important ability for designers. They can communicate their thoughts and receive feedback and comments from others. An effective collaborator acknowledges their faults, listens to others, and communicates clearly.
Psychological intelligence: Understanding how people interact with the product and how their decisions can be affected or controlled are subjects that designers must explore. Psychology can be used to create more intuitive, human-centered products and experiences. We can design for people’s actual behaviours by following some important psychological principles rather than imposing the design of a product or experience on users.
Management of time: A designer must be able to properly manage their time because their profession is time-sensitive. They must complete the entire design work within the timeframe specified. The designer has to be aware of the estimated time required for a given task. Otherwise, they will not be able to manage the entire design process.
Divergent thinking: Divergent thinking is a problem-solving technique that investigates various possible approaches using an open-ended, innovative, and unrestricted approach. It is a useful skill for problem-solving and coming up with original ideas. Applying divergent thinking to corporate problems can produce valuable and long-term solutions.
Storytelling: Storytelling is an effective method for learning about and expressing the requirements of an audience. This skill is particularly useful for designers faced with establishing consistent brand representations.
Prioritization: The most significant issues are determined using a prioritisation matrix. To ensure that every project is completed successfully, the designer should understand how to prioritise the tasks. It will help to move on to the next stage of the design career.
I have shared with you these important skills that you should have in order to grow in your design career.
I hope this blog will definitely help you succeed.
